The core material of the masks and wet wipes you wear and use every day is actually PP non-woven fabric

Have you ever thought about the masks you wear every day when going out, the wet wipes you take out after dinner, the baby wipes you use for babies, and the static mop cloth for cleaning the floor at home… These things may seem unrelated, but they have a common “soul material”?

It is – PP non-woven fabric .

Don’t be scared by this name that sounds like it’s from a chemistry textbook. If you open a medical surgical mask, you will find a three-layer structure inside, with the core middle layer (meltblown layer) and the inner and outer layers (spunbond layer), almost all of which are “variants” of PP non-woven fabric. The wet wipes you used to wipe your hands are soft, non shedding, and can lock in moisture. The substrate is also made of PP non-woven fabric.

It can be said that without PP non-woven fabric, there would be no convenience of modern disposable sanitary products. Especially during the pandemic, billions of people around the world rely on it to stop the virus; In daily life, it silently guards every aspect of us from cleanliness to health.

But strangely enough, few people truly understand it.

Today, let’s uncover the identity of this’ low-key expert ‘- what exactly is PP non-woven fabric? Why are masks and wipes inseparable from it? Is it safe? Is it environmentally friendly?

 PP non-woven fabric ≠ ordinary plastic fabric, it is actually “cloth”

Many people’s first reaction when they hear “PP” is polypropylene, a common plastic material. Listening to ‘non-woven fabric’ again, do you think it’s made of the same material as non-woven bags? That’s right, PP non-woven fabric is a type of “non-woven fabric” made from polypropylene through processes such as melting, spinning, laying, and reinforcement.

The key point lies in the three words’ non-woven ‘. Traditional fabrics, whether cotton, linen, or synthetic fibers, require spinning and weaving, with yarns interwoven with warp and weft. PP non-woven fabric does not require individual yarns, but rather directly fixes fibers together through methods such as thermal bonding, chemical bonding, or mechanical entanglement.

For example, traditional fabrics like bamboo baskets are woven one by one; Non woven fabric is more like pressing a pile of cotton into felt, with fibers tangled but tightly “held” together.

This special structure gives PP non-woven fabric three great talents:

-Breathable but not permeable: There are tiny pores between the fibers that allow air to pass through, but liquid water is kept out – this is the secret of masks blocking droplets and allowing people to breathe smoothly.
- Soft and Strong : much more durable than paper, unable to tear or rub, with a hand feel similar to textiles.
-Low cost and mass production capability: The cost of producing one ton of PP non-woven fabric is much lower than that of cotton fabric of the same area, and the production speed is extremely fast. One production line can produce several hundred meters per minute.

 The “heart” of a mask is PP meltblown fabric

Let’s talk about masks first.

The medical surgical mask or N95 you use usually has three layers:

-Outer layer (spunbond non-woven fabric): anti droplet, large particle, made of PP spunbond fabric, wear-resistant and tear resistant.
-Middle layer (melt blown non-woven fabric): This is the true filtering core. The fiber diameter of meltblown fabric is extremely fine, only 1-5 microns. After  polarization treatment , it carries an electrostatic charge and can adsorb viruses, bacteria, and dust like a magnet. This layer is also made of PP material, but the process is more complex.

-Inner layer (spunbond non-woven fabric): skin friendly, moisture absorbing, not itchy or stuffy when adhered to the skin, still made of PP.

So, over 90% of the weight of a mask comes from PP non woven fabric. At the peak of the pandemic, the world was competing for “meltblown fabrics”, essentially competing for high specification PP non-woven fabrics.

Why is PP suitable for making masks? Because it is odorless, non-toxic, and non allergenic. If it is other plastics, such as PVC, it may contain plasticizers, which can cause problems when applied to the face; Polypropylene is widely recognized as a food grade safe material (many takeaway food boxes are also made of PP), and there is no problem with skin contact.

Let’s take a look at the wet wipes again.

You take out a wet wipe, which feels damp and soft to the touch, but the layer of “fabric” itself is not cotton or paper – the majority of non-woven wipes are made of PP non-woven fabric (or a mixture of PP and adhesive fibers).

Why use PP? Because cotton is too expensive and wood pulp paper rots when it comes into contact with water. PP non-woven fabric, after undergoing water jet technology (where fibers are entangled by high-pressure micro water flow), is both soft and tough. It will not fall apart when soaked in liquid and will not shed hair when wiping tables. It can also be made into different thicknesses and textures according to needs.

You may ask: PP is plastic, using it to make wet wipes is not environmentally friendly?

This is a good question and also a misconception that many people have about non-woven fabrics.

To be honest, PP non-woven fabric does come from fossil materials, and natural degradation takes decades. But things are not that simple.

-Compared to traditional textiles, producing 1 ton of cotton fabric requires about 20 tons of water, as well as a large amount of pesticide and dye pollution; PP non-woven fabric requires almost no water and has much lower energy consumption.

-It can actually be recycled: Pure PP non-woven fabric belongs to plastic grade 5, and some recycling systems can handle it. Some brands have started using recycled PP to make wet wipes.

-More environmentally friendly option : There are now biodegradable non-woven fabrics available, such as PLA (polylactic acid) non-woven fabric, but the cost is 2-3 times that of PP. The mainstream market is still dominated by PP.

So objectively speaking, PP non-woven fabric is not a perfect environmentally friendly material, but in the category of “disposable hygiene products”, it is already the optimal solution after comprehensive performance, cost, and resource consumption. True environmental protection lies more in using it on demand and not discarding it indiscriminately.

PP non-woven fabric that you don’t know: from diapers to tea bags, everywhere

Masks and wipes are just the tip of the iceberg. The PP nonwoven fabric you come into contact with in your life is beyond imagination:

- Infant and toddler products : The bottom film and flow guiding layer for diapers, as well as the surface layer of women’s sanitary napkins, are all made of PP non-woven fabric (treated with hydrophilic or water repellent properties).

-Medical field: Surgical gowns, isolation gowns, hats, shoe covers, and dressing cloths – disposable to avoid cross infection.
-Home cleaning: disposable mop, kitchen wipe, air purifier filter.

-Agriculture: greenhouse insulation blanket, fruit bagging, weed control cloth.

-Packaging : Inner layer of courier bag, tea bag, coffee filter paper (partially).

Even in the new clothes you buy, many of the lining, collar lining, and shoulder pads are made of PP non-woven fabric.

It can be said that PP non-woven fabric is one of the most successful “invisible materials” in modern industry. It may not be conspicuous, but without it, social health security, medical protection, and daily convenience would regress by decades.

Correctly understanding and using it is more important than blindly refusing

Some people are concerned that wearing a mask made of PP non-woven fabric every day may result in inhaling microplastics?

At present, scientific research shows that the PP fibers in masks are stable within the structure and will not shed inhalable particles when worn normally. What really needs to be wary of is that discarded masks can decompose into microplastics after entering the environment for a long time. So cutting off the ear hook rope and throwing it into the trash can is a responsible behavior that everyone can do.

For wet wipes, it is recommended to choose products labeled as “non-woven fabric substrate” as much as possible and not buy three no wet wipes from unknown sources. Please dispose of the used wet wipes in other garbage or dry trash cans, and do not flush them into the toilet (even if labeled as “washable”, they are still prone to clogging).

The next time you put on a mask or take out a wet wipe, think about it: behind this small piece of PP non-woven fabric is the accumulation of decades of modern materials science – from petroleum to polypropylene particles, from melt spinning to precision mesh laying, countless engineers have optimized its filtration efficiency, softness, strength, and cost.

It may not be romantic or natural enough, but it is a practical tool created by human intelligence. In the face of the complex demands of the epidemic, pollution, and convenience, PP non-woven fabric is not a perfect answer, but one of the best answers at present.

Understanding it, making good use of it, and disposing of it properly – this is the attitude of a rational consumer.
