Why do high-end products still rely on imports when China's PP non-woven fabric production capacity accounts for 45% of the world's total?
Open your mask, baby diapers, wet wipes, or car interior - these products are likely to have a layer of polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric. China is undoubtedly the world's "world factory" for PP non-woven fabrics: its production capacity accounts for about 45% of the world's total, and the total production of non-woven fabrics will exceed 8 million tons by 2025. The global non-woven fabric production capacity distribution presents a distinct pattern of "rising in the east and falling in the west", with China accounting for 42% to 55% of the total global production capacity, while the share of North America and Europe has shrunk to 28%.
It sounds very glamorous, right? But there is an awkward reality hidden in the industry: China still heavily relies on imports for high-end PP non-woven fabrics.
Being able to create "and" being able to create well "are two different things
To understand this paradox, we need to first figure out how PP non-woven fabric is layered.
The low-end market - shopping bags, regular packaging, disposable tablecloths - is thriving for Chinese manufacturers. Low cost, large production capacity, fast shipping, and no global competitors can be found. But looking up, the game rules for the high-end market are completely different: medical grade meltblown fabric (the core filter layer of N95 masks), ultra-fine spunbond non-woven fabric (the surface layer of high-end diapers), high-performance SMS composite non-woven fabric (surgical gowns, isolation gowns), flash evaporation non-woven fabric (high value-added medical packaging) - these products still have an import dependency of over 50%.
In other words, China can produce the world's largest amount of PP non-woven fabric, but the most profitable part still needs to be bought from others.
Three 'neck binding' places
**Firstly, the raw materials. **The source of PP non-woven fabric is polypropylene resin. Ordinary shopping bags are made of polypropylene, and domestic pipes are sufficient. But high-end products require "specialized materials" - the melt spraying method requires a melt flow rate of over 1000g/10min, and the spunbond method also requires precise control of 30-40 g/10min. This special polypropylene with high melting point, narrow distribution, and low ash content has long relied on imports in China. Although some companies have started to make breakthroughs in recent years, there is still a considerable distance to go before comprehensive replacement.
More importantly, the process route. The domestic production capacity of polypropylene is mainly based on oil production (45%) and coal production (25%), and the products mainly meet the needs of the middle and low-end markets. The true support for high-end non-woven fabrics is the PDH process (accounting for about 20%), which produces ultra-high purity polypropylene that is irreplaceable in the fields of medical meltblown fabrics and high-end SMS non-woven fabrics. The raw material propane for PDH process is highly dependent on imports, and once tariffs fluctuate or supply chain problems occur, high-end production capacity is directly limited.
Secondly, the equipment. **This is no secret - China's high-end non-woven fabric production equipment mainly relies on imports. The names Leifenhauer from Germany, STP and NWT from Italy are well-known in Chinese non-woven fabric factories. At present, domestic equipment is mainly focused on replicating medium thick product lines, and there is still a significant gap in core areas such as high-speed spinning and melting composite technology (production line speed ≥ 600 meters/minute). The equipment determines what level of product you can produce. If the equipment cannot keep up, the product will get stuck at your waist.
Thirdly, patents. **This is the most invisible and deadly barrier. Taking the electrostatic polarization technology of meltblown fabric as an example - which is the core process that enables masks to adsorb virus particles - the core patent is still monopolized by companies such as 3M in the United States. Japanese and Korean companies hold a 70% market share in the ultrafiltration grade meltblown fabric market. The R&D investment intensity of domestic enterprises is only 2.1%, lower than the international average level. You can make products on someone else's patent, but you have to pay a high licensing fee and never catch up with the iteration speed of the leader.
The 'virtual obesity' of production capacity and the 'real thinness' of the market
There is also an undeniable background: China's PP non-woven fabric production capacity itself has a structural "virtual fat".
During the 2020-2021 pandemic, the demand for epidemic prevention materials surged, and China's PP non-woven fabric production reached a peak of 5.2 million tons at one point. But after the demand for epidemic prevention receded, the production has rationally fallen to around 3 million tons. This' half cut 'callback exposes the essence of the problem - a large number of production lines were hastily launched for low-end epidemic prevention materials. When demand disappears, these production capacities cannot be converted to high-end products, nor can new exports be found.
At the same time, the import volume of non-woven fabrics in China will still reach about 450000 tons by 2025, mainly concentrated in the fields of high-end filter materials and special medical fabrics. What is imported is not quantity, but quality.
The dawn is just beginning, but the road is still long
The good news is that changes are happening. By 2025, the breakthrough of Chinese enterprises in high-speed spinning and melting composite technology has increased the import substitution rate of high-end products from 28% to 37%. Shandong Tianhou New Materials has achieved domestic mass production of 0.007mm ultra-thin conductive non-woven fabric. The flash evaporation nonwoven technology has also been overcome by Chinese companies, with costs reduced by more than 30% compared to DuPont's products.
The Chinese PP non-woven fabric industry is standing at a critical turning point from a "world factory" to a "global value creator". But to transform from a 45% production capacity giant to a true high-end player, it is necessary to continue to break through in three battlefields: specialized material research and development, core equipment manufacturing, and basic patent layout.
The number of production capacity is sexy, but the thickness of technology determines how far you can go.
