From dressing to ‘wearing technology’! This exchange meeting reveals the new direction of the textile industry during the 15th Five Year Plan period

The intelligent fiber and flexible wearable industry, as the future industries in the textile field, are becoming the core direction for the high-quality development of the textile industry. Currently, the China Textile Industry Federation is leading the discussion and formulation of the “15th Five Year Plan” for the textile industry. How to promote technological innovation and achievement transformation in related fields, and cultivate new quality productivity in the industry? The 2nd Intelligent Fiber and Flexible Wearable Technology Exchange Conference was held in Nantong, Jiangsu from November 11th to 12th.

The conference is hosted by the Textile Industry Science and Technology Development Center, jointly organized by Jiangsu Jicui Advanced Fiber Materials Research Institute Co., Ltd. and the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Fiber Materials. Zhang Chuanxiong, Director of the Science and Technology Development Department of China Textile Federation, and Wang Dong, Vice President of Wuhan Textile University, co chaired the conference.

Planning and Layout for the 15th Five Year Plan of the Textile Industry

At the meeting of the Intelligent Fiber and Flexible Wearable Working Group of China Textile Federation, renowned scholars and industry experts conducted in-depth analysis on the development trend of intelligent fibers, as well as the application of intelligent fibers and flexible wearable technology in medical, sports, elderly care, military clothing and other fields, and shared relevant research results.

Zhu Meifang, an academician of the CAS Member and director of the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Fiber Materials, said in his speech that since the “14th Five Year Plan”, smart fiber and flexible wearable technology have received extensive attention at home and abroad. Nowadays, the technology of fiber materials has evolved from fine and functional to intelligent, and there is a mutual reaction between it and the surrounding environment, which is reflected in the upgrade from passive functional response to intelligent active adaptation. In the future, the intelligence and cross-border integration of fibers will be the core development trend.

Professor Wang Hongzhi from Donghua University starts with the development history of intelligent fibers and elaborates on their trend towards functional development. He proposed that smart fibers are the most ideal carrier for flexible electronic devices. Smart fibers are not simply “adding electronic components to clothing”, but making the fibers themselves electronic devices.

Professor Wang Lu from Donghua University focuses on the integration of intelligent flexible wearable technology and medical applications, introducing the current development status of surface wearable and implantable intelligent textiles. She proposed that the application of intelligent textiles in the medical field is not limited to disease monitoring, but more importantly, to achieve active treatment, develop integrated diagnosis and treatment models, and build a closed-loop management system for monitoring and treatment.

Professor Hu Yixin from the Second Medical Center of the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital introduced the clinical demand for intelligent fibers and flexible wearable technology from the perspectives of elderly care health and chronic disease management. She proposed that the textile industry has strong potential to help extend geriatric medicine from outpatient clinics to communities, and build a full chain proactive health service system.

Li Chenming, Director of the Institute of Military Supply Engineering Technology at the System Engineering Research Institute of the Academy of Military Sciences, introduced the application prospects of intelligent flexible wearable technology in the field of military equipment. He stated that flexible intelligent wearable materials integrate intelligent functions such as perception, computing, and communication, and have broad application space in the field of military equipment in the future.

Yan Yan, Ph.D. of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared the application of high-tech materials in sports. He used domestic high-performance shooting clothing systems, rowing superhydrophobic technology and implementation plans, and cold and hot alternating motion recovery systems as examples to propose the engineering cross fusion of multidisciplinary technologies, which is a key path to promote the progress of sports engineering technology and demonstrates broad application prospects.

Li Lingshen, Vice President of the China Textile Federation and Leader of the Intelligent Fiber and Flexible Wearable Working Group, stated that since its establishment one year ago, the working group has closely linked the forces of industry, academia, and research, promoted resource integration and sharing, and achieved fruitful results in related fields of research. Compared with the high popularity of academic research, the industrialization of new technologies still faces a longer path. The working group systematically reviews the current development status of intelligent fibers and flexible wearable technology, providing support for the layout of the textile industry’s “15th Five Year Plan”. Whether it is the cultivation of future industries or the upgrading of existing industries, smart wearables will be a key direction for the technological development of the industry.

The development and application of cutting-edge technologies are flourishing with a hundred flowers blooming

Currently, the development of intelligent fibers and flexible wearable technology is showing a flourishing trend, with rich and diverse practical achievements in various application scenarios such as aviation, home textiles, medicine, and outdoor.

Wu Guanghui, an academician of the CAE Member and the chief scientist of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, introduced the leading role of the large aircraft industry in the innovative development of aviation materials, as well as the progress in the research, development and application of carbon fiber composites through video reports.

Professor Zhang Xueji, a lecturer at Shenzhen University and academician of the American Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, conducted an in-depth analysis of the latest intelligent sensing technology, multimodal signal monitoring, and health management trends and huge market potential around the theme of fiber based wearable intelligent sensing and active health. He also shared the research results of his team in related fields.

Yang Xiaoming, Chief Technical Expert of Zhejiang Fulai New Materials Co., Ltd., introduced the integration innovation and implementation practice of flexible sensing materials empowering wearable technology, and proposed that the key to technology implementation lies in achieving a collaborative closed-loop of materials, processes, and application scenarios.

Professor Gu Zhen from Zhejiang University introduced the technological innovation achievements of intelligent drugs and advanced drug delivery systems, which can achieve more lasting and precise drug effects.
Chang Jing, a wearable product technology expert at Honor Terminal Co., Ltd., shared Honor’s new technologies and application cases in the field of wearable sports and health, and looked forward to future technological development directions.

Intelligent and flexible wearables outline the future of the industry

The conference also held special exchanges on the themes of medical care, health, and smart living.

In the special exchange on medical care and health, experts such as Cui Xiang, director of the Orthopedics Department of the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army, and Liu Su, director of the Rehabilitation Department of Nantong University Affiliated Hospital, discussed the clinical needs of trauma orthopedics, the development of rehabilitation medicine, and the construction of integrated medical care and health. Representatives from enterprises, universities, and hospitals, including Cao Xiaoyan, R&D Director of Beijing Natong Technology Group Co., Ltd., Jiang Guansen, General Manager of Boaofang Biotechnology Co., Ltd., and Yan Wei, Professor of Donghua University, had in-depth exchanges on innovation in new material orthopedic implant devices, industrialization of biodegradable biomedical fibers, research and development of intelligent electronic fiber materials, as well as cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation assistance, and other fields.

In the special exchange on smart living, the attending guests shared about sleep health, clothing function upgrades, and future application directions of flexible wearables.
