Green operating rooms lead to sustainable healthcare, with cotton non-woven fabric becoming the focus

The average daily usage time of the operating room is only 3.6 hours, but it accounts for 30% of the total energy consumption of the hospital. A green revolution targeting healthcare carbon emissions is starting from the operating room.

In September 2025, at the China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) held in Guangzhou, the exhibition area of Steady Medical with the theme of “Green Operating Room” attracted a lot of attention. The scene based display presents the entire process before, during, and after surgery to the audience, with all cotton hydroentangled non-woven fabric becoming the core of this green transformation.

Behind all cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric is the enormous environmental pressure faced by the medical industry – medical institutions account for 5% of global carbon emissions. As a key emission source for hospitals, the operating room has an average daily usage time of only 3.6 hours, but it accounts for 30% of the hospital’s total energy consumption.

A material revolution for green operating rooms

At the CMEF exhibition site, the “Green Operating Room” exhibition area of Steady Medical presented a deconstruction and reset of sustainable healthcare. All cotton hydroentangled non-woven fabric has become the protagonist of this green transformation.

The disposable surgical bag in the core area of the operation uses this all cotton hydroentangled non-woven fabric material, combined with an intelligent liquid management system, to achieve standardized configuration of consumables.

This material is not only safe, reliable, and cost-effective, but also meets the diverse needs of the six major departments, providing functional support for surgical sensing and control.

Unlike traditional synthetic materials, the core advantage of all cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric lies in its environmentally friendly and biodegradable properties. Seeing the environmental pollution caused by the improper disposal of a large amount of medical waste, Steady Medical has decided to invest a large amount of research and development funds in the study of all cotton water jet non-woven surgical consumables, replacing chemical fiber raw materials with all cotton.

Full Process Solution for Green Operating Room

The green operating room solution for robust healthcare covers the complete process of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, forming a systematic and sustainable healthcare system.

In the preoperative preparation area, the all cotton biodegradable brush hand clothes and zero lead radiation protection clothes displayed can reduce the weight of medical staff by 30% through lightweight design, while reducing the possibility of neurological damage to medical staff.

The postoperative area displays cotton patient gowns, antibacterial curtains, and other products. Applying high-end dressings can greatly reduce dressing pain, prevent pressure ulcers, and accelerate recovery.
Steady Medical also demonstrates the core advantages of “green operating rooms” in terms of safety, efficiency, and environmental protection through comparative research on the degradation efficiency of postoperative medical waste.

Black Light Factory Supports Green Product Strategy

To support the large-scale implementation of the green product strategy, Steady Medical is accelerating the construction of 11 “black light factories”.

Wu Kezhen, the rotating CEO of Steady Medical, revealed that the company plans to achieve 11 black light workshops within 2-3 years, of which 80% will be located in Hubei, and it is expected to be completed by 2027.
The Black Lamp project focuses on promoting automation, intelligent logistics, robotics, industrial AI vision, and digital twin technology construction, “said Wu Kezhen.” We simultaneously use lean management, TPM, and 6sigma to ensure the stability of production processes and equipment, as well as the reliability of product quality, reducing anomalies and manual intervention to ultimately achieve a black lamp factory. ”

Unmanned production throughout the entire process will significantly reduce labor costs, material and equipment losses, and energy consumption. This intelligent manufacturing strategy will strongly support the company’s core strategy of “product leadership, excellent operation, and global vision”, providing technical support for the large-scale production of green products.

Health economics validates green healthcare

On September 27th, Steady Medical hosted the “Green Drive, Value First” Medical Consumables Management Seminar at the first CMEF Health Promotion Conference and launched a research project on the hygiene economics of disposable surgical kits.

This project collaborates with institutions such as Hainan Boao Medical Innovation Research Institute and the health industry to focus on the cost-effectiveness and clinical value of biodegradable surgical kits.
According to He Da, an associate researcher at the Shanghai Health and Health Research Center who participated in the meeting, this project will provide key decision-making basis for the hospital’s refined management transformation by scientifically calculating the full life cycle cost of disposable surgical kits.

Zhu Wei, Vice President of Tongji Hospital affiliated with Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Dean of Optics Valley Campus, emphasized that “the construction of a green hospital is not a one-day effort, and the optimization of the management of low value consumables also requires long-term efforts. Let us attach importance to it from a conceptual perspective, implement it from action, and jointly promote the hospital to steadily move forward on the path of green, efficient, and high-quality development through refined, informationized, and process optimized management practices.

The Future Path of Sustainable Medical Development

The sustainable development of the medical field has become a global issue. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Mo’s Surgical Clinic has successfully reduced waste generation by 33% and electricity consumption by 71% through systematic green interventions, achieving an annual reduction of 47.93 tons of greenhouse gases.

The study specifically pointed out that before intervention, electricity consumption accounted for only 5% of the total carbon emissions, while waste disposal accounted for 95% of the absolute dominant position. This finding overturns the traditional notion that “energy consumption is the main source of carbon emissions”.

In the face of this global challenge, Steady Healthcare has set a clear goal of achieving a 50% share of sustainable products by 2027.

At the Chain Expo in July, Steady Healthcare and upstream and downstream enterprises jointly released the “Green Win Win Chain Initiative”, calling on upstream and downstream partners to jointly build a healthy and sustainable cooperation ecosystem, and enhance the “gold content” of enterprise development with the “green content” of the supply chain.

Dongguan Liansheng Non woven Technology Co., Ltd. was established in May 2020. It is a large-scale non-woven fabric production enterprise integrating research and development, production, and sales. It can produce various colors of PP spunbond non-woven fabrics with a width of less than 3.2 meters from 9 grams to 300 grams.
