The ‘invisible backbone’ of road construction: high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile, supporting national key highway projects

The national key expressway project is a “transportation artery” that connects regional development and supports economic takeoff, with extreme requirements for engineering quality, service life, and safety performance. In key areas such as roadbed reinforcement, pavement protection, and drainage and anti-seepage, there is a “hidden material” that silently plays a core role – high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile. It is hidden under the subgrade and in the pavement, just like the “bones” of the road. With its high strength, weather resistance, anti-aging and other excellent properties, it has solved many pain points in road construction, protected the reconstruction and expansion of Shenyang Haikou Expressway, Beijing Shanghai Expressway and other national key projects, and become an indispensable core material for modern high-speed highway construction.

Why can it become an ‘invisible skeleton’? Core performance adaptation to meet the urgent needs of high-speed construction

The reason why high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile can become the preferred material for national key highway projects lies in its precise matching with the strict requirements of outdoor road construction, perfectly integrating “high strength” and “multifunctionality”, and fundamentally improving the stability and durability of road engineering. Compared with ordinary geotextiles, it is made of 100% high-quality virgin polyester chips as raw materials and processed by spunbond filament hot rolling technology. Each performance has been strictly tested and fully complies with the national standard “Long filament spunbond needle punched nonwoven geotextiles” (GB/T 17639-2023), laying a solid foundation for engineering quality.

High intensity is its core advantage and also the origin of the name “muscle and bone”. Relying on the continuous spunbond filament structure and precise hot rolling consolidation process, its longitudinal fracture strength can reach over 800N/5cm, and its transverse fracture strength is not less than 750N/5cm. The fracture strength far exceeds that of ordinary needle punched geotextile, which can effectively disperse the stress of the roadbed, restrain soil particles, prevent uneven settlement of the roadbed and pavement cracking – this is the core requirement for highways to withstand heavy loads and high-frequency traffic for a long time. In soft soil foundation sections, it can increase the bearing capacity of the foundation by more than 35%, control the settlement within 5cm, far below industry standards, and avoid common quality problems such as road subsidence and cracking from the root.

In addition to high strength, it also has practical performance for multiple adaptations to high-speed construction. Outstanding weather resistance, with a strong retention rate of over 88% even after 1500 hours of UV accelerated aging testing. It can be used stably in extreme environments ranging from -30 ℃ to 220 ℃, and is not afraid of long-term exposure to sunlight, rain, and snow on highways; Excellent chemical stability, with a strong retention rate of over 92% even after soaking in an acidic and alkaline environment with a pH value of 3-12 for 180 days. It can resist the erosion of acidic and alkaline substances in soil and adapt to various complex geological conditions; At the same time, it has good drainage and filtration functions, with a porosity controlled at 70% -80%, which can quickly drain the accumulated water in the roadbed, prevent the loss of fine soil particles, avoid roadbed softening, and balance the dual functions of reinforcement and anti-seepage.

Crafted with ingenuity, every step conforms to engineering standards

The excellent performance of high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile cannot be achieved without rigorous and standardized production processes. It adopts an integrated production process of “spunbond+hot rolling”, which does not require the addition of chemical adhesives and is environmentally friendly and odorless throughout the entire process. It not only retains the strong and tough characteristics of polyester fibers to the greatest extent, but also ensures the stability and consistency of product performance. Each production process strictly follows national standards and accurately controls various parameters.

At the beginning of production, high-quality primary polyester chips with characteristic viscosity ≥ 0.64dL/g and melting point ≥ 255 ℃ are selected to eliminate the mixing of recycled materials, ensure that the raw materials are free of impurities and have a tight molecular structure, and lay the foundation for high-strength products. Subsequently, the polyester chips are melted at a high temperature of 280-290 ℃ and spun using advanced spinning equipment to form high-strength polyester filaments with a diameter of 0.3-0.8mm per filament. They are then stretched by high-speed airflow and precisely laid to form a uniform and dense fiber network structure. The uniformity error of the laid network is ≤ 5%, ensuring that the geotextile is subjected to balanced forces in all directions.

The core hot rolling process is even more refined, adopting a dual pass hot rolling shaping process: the first pass is pre pressed at 185 ± 3 ℃ to form controllable fiber melting and bonding points; The secondary layer is compressed and extended at 205 ± 2 ℃, forming a gradient structure of dense surface layer and loose core layer, which ensures the high strength of the material and avoids stiffness caused by excessive bonding. During the production process, an infrared online temperature measurement and closed-loop feedback system is equipped to ensure that the coefficient of variation of the weight of each roll of fabric is ≤ 3.2%. The weight can be flexibly customized between 15-280g/m ², and the maximum width can reach 4.5m, accurately adapting to the construction needs of different highway sections.

Empowering national highways and witnessing the power of “invisible muscles and bones”

With excellent performance and strict national standard compliance, high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile has been widely used in multiple national key highway projects, playing a core role in key links such as roadbed reinforcement, pavement crack prevention, drainage and seepage prevention, and safeguarding the safety and stability of the transportation arteries with strength.

In the expansion project of the Shenhai Expressway from Liangcheng to Fenshui, this material has become the core material for roadbed splicing and pavement protection. As an important component of the national highway network’s “Vertical Second” line, this project is renovated and expanded according to the two-way eight lane standard, with a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour and extremely high requirements for roadbed stability. During construction, high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile was laid at the roadbed joint and pavement base, effectively dispersing pavement loads, suppressing roadbed settlement, and delaying the occurrence of reflective cracks. Combined with the “sponge+geotextile+fully automatic spraying” curing process, the incidence of pavement diseases was significantly reduced, helping the project to be rated as a typical case of safe construction site for transportation projects under construction in the province.

In the renovation and expansion project of the Xinyi Huai’an section of the Beijing Shanghai Expressway, this material perfectly solved the problems of roadbed drainage and softening. As the transportation backbone connecting Beijing and Shanghai, this section of road has been renovated and expanded into a two-way eight lane road with a roadbed width of 42m. The core pain points of the construction are the accumulation of water in the old embankment and the capillary rise of groundwater. The construction party uses high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile with drainage pads to quickly drain the accumulated water at the bottom of the old embankment, prevent groundwater from infiltrating into the roadbed, ensure stable soil moisture content, effectively improve roadbed strength and stability, and ensure project quality and traffic safety.

The application of this material has significantly improved the durability of the road surface in the Aksu transit section of National Highway 314. As an important component of the “China Pakistan Economic Corridor Strategic Corridor”, this section of the road adopts asphalt concrete pavement. During construction, high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile is laid as the crack prevention base cloth to disperse and expand the tensile stress caused by pavement cracking, dissipate the concentrated stress at the crack location, and delay the occurrence of reflection cracks. Since the opening of the vehicle, the number and degree of road surface diseases on the section where this material is laid have been significantly lower than other sections, fully demonstrating its excellent protective performance.

Highlighting cost-effectiveness and helping to build a strong transportation country

With the continuous upgrading of domestic non-woven technology, high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextiles have achieved large-scale and standardized production. Domestic enterprises such as Shandong Hengyang and Tiandingfeng, relying on advanced production equipment and precise process control, produce products with performance that benchmark international advanced levels and strictly comply with national standards. They can provide complete testing reports and have significant cost-effectiveness advantages, gradually breaking the monopoly of foreign investment in the high-end geotextile market.

Compared with traditional geotextiles, high-strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextiles not only have a longer service life, but can also extend the service life of highway subgrades and pavements by 10-15 years without frequent maintenance and replacement, significantly reducing engineering maintenance costs; Moreover, the construction is convenient and can be directly laid and quickly consolidated, which is suitable for the high-strength and high-efficiency construction needs of highways and can effectively shorten the construction period. At the same time, its environmentally friendly, odorless, and recyclable characteristics are also in line with the “dual carbon” policy and the concept of green transportation construction.

The construction of national key highways, every detail is related to engineering quality and traffic safety. High strength polyester spunbond hot-rolled geotextile, with the power of “invisible tendons”, solves industry pain points such as roadbed settlement, pavement cracking, and poor drainage, empowering national projects such as Shenhai Expressway and Jinghu Expressway, and safeguarding the smoothness and stability of transportation arteries with professional performance. In the future, with the continuous upgrading of technology and iterative optimization of products, it will continue to deeply cultivate the field of road construction, inject more “invisible power” into the construction of China’s transportation power, and help create more safe and century old quality projects.

Dongguan Liansheng Non woven Technology Co., Ltd. was established in May 2020. It is a large-scale non-woven fabric production enterprise integrating research and development, production, and sales.
